If you don’t know about us here’s our quick intro..

Introducing…. Nature Works Farm!

At the start of 2016, we (Bob and Cassandra, a young aspiring farm couple) purchased a roadside plant nursery in Brush Valley PA, near Indiana PA. With three functional greenhouses and 16 acres of land, we got to work right away!  We opened the nursery doors for business in April 2016 and sold produce from the farm and at the Indiana County Farmers Market all summer long. We also have an abundance of animals: chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, pigs, cats and a dog. Learn  more about all of our farming adventures by exploring the rest of our website.

A little more about us and why we’re here

Cassandra is a force to be reckoned with in the greenhouse.  While working for a Pittsburgh urban farming nonprofit for 5 years, she managed the historic Frick greenhouse and a small urban garden nearby. Her interest in education was sparked through the many tours and classes she gave on small scale sustainable gardening. With a passion for healthy living and homestead arts, she is excited to immerse herself in life outside the city and learn from her new community in Indiana County.

Bob grew up in Bedford, PA and inspired to teach and try to be a positive force in the world, became an elementary teacher and environmental educator. Small scale home food production, sustainable farm practices, and building strong local food webs and communities has been his focus over the last 15 years.  During that time, managing an urban farm and nursery, learning from some amazing farmers, teaching gardening classes, speaking at events, he was working towards farm ownership.  Now with the space and opportunities available at Nature Works and the Indiana community, he hopes to penetrate and enrich the soils, lives and food culture of the community through diversified farming and education.

We as a couple are driven to make a living from a fun, healthy, peaceful home and business. We are working to create a small diversified farm, focused on providing our food needs and income.  By using growing practices developed for small organic farms and homesteads, we are enriching the soil and land while reaping added benefits from the biodiversity, interrelationships and retention of carbon, nutrients, and water.  We have a lot more to learn but are off to a good start.

About the farm

This land was originally part of the Brown family farm.  About twenty years ago it was sold off and turned into a nursery business called Pine Springs Farm, specializing in flower baskets and vegetable and flower starter plants. We are excited to continue the legacy of Pine Spring Farm, but with our own twists. We renamed the business Nature Works Farm, which captures for us our relationship to the plants, animals, and people involved with our food production and our involvement in realigning with a more natural food system and life style.

We can’t wait to meet you and be your source for local and sustainable plants, produce, cut flowers, eggs, and so much more!
